File Integrity

Various DOS events can result in file damage. The File Integrity test can test the form design, the free storage chain, the main index and the linkage of forms to the index. It can also be used to eliminate duplicate records. It is a good idea to run File Integrity once a week.

Here are the steps:

From the MD VersaForm Main Menu select #6 – VersaForm XL Main Menu.

From the VersaForm XL Main Menu select #7 – Utilities.

From this menu, XL Utility Menu select #6 – File Integrity

You will be asked for the drive and path of the file you wish to examine. If the displayed information is not correct type in the appropiate information. Press <Enter>

Supply the name of the file when asked (for example "Ledger.vfm").

You will see the following menu:

Mdcsdesk00000034.gif

Select item #5 "All Checks" and press <Enter>

If asked about removing duplicates and unindexed forms respond with an "Y".

When the test is completed you will be returned the the above menu. Select #6 "Return to main menu". You will see an error count in the upper left corner of the screen and be asked if you want a printout of the process. A "Yes" answer will produce a short report that shows your errors and duplicate forms.

NOTE: You can have all of the data files checked from the DOS prompt. At the DOS prompt in the VF directory type "vf filetest /fix *.vfm". A log will be produced which can be read later using a DOS text editor (like "vfedit.exe").

To automate the process under Window 95/98/NT follow these steps:

In VersaForm Press <Alt+U>, highlight "Shell to DOS" press <Enter>

At the DOS Prompt type <edit filetest.bat> and press <Enter>

You will see a blue screen. Type <vf id=manager/vf filetest /fix *.vfm>. The ID is equal to the normal login name/password.

Press <Alt+F>, select "X" for exit. You will be asked if you want to save the file – answer "Y".

Type <exit> and press <Enter> to return to VersaForm.

At the Windows Desktop click on an empty space with the right mouse button.

From the menu that pops-up click on "new" then click on "shortcut".

In the "command line" box type <x:\yyy\filetest.bat> then click on "Next". NOTE: "X" is the drive letter where VersaForm is located and "YYY" is the directory where VersaForm is located.

Type in a name for the shortcut – like <VF Intergity> and click on "Next"

Select an icon you want to use and then click on "Finish"

An icon will be on the desktop. When you click on this icon VersaForm will do a file intergity on each of the data files.

NOTE: It is recommended that File Intergity be done once a week.
