File Recovery vs File Integrity When should a File Recovery be done? What about a File Integrity? What is the difference? File Recovery – Re-builds the entire file. The process recovers lost or damaged data and re-builds the index. Some records may be lost during the process. The recovered data is written to a new file. The file being recovered does not need to have a readable form design present. But if it doesn't, you must provide an empty file with the correct form design to receive the records found. Such a file can usually be built from an older backup of the lost file by use of the "Copy an existing form design" subfunction of the Form Design Menu. Do a file recovery when: your index seems to be invalid (you are going through the file and all of a sudden are in a different place in the alphabet) you get a "wrong form type" error a "form cannot be read" error a record has "garbage" for data "Invalid subfile structure" error message File Integrity – Various DOS events can result in file damage. The File Integrity test can test the form design, the free storage chain, the main index and the linkage of forms to the index. It can also be used to eliminate duplicate records. We recommend that File Integrity be done on a weekly basis. His recommendation is to do the full check. To test only the index features – and remove duplicate files – only run the Index Completeness Check (number 4).
