Moving VersaForm From One Computer to a Different Computer

When moving VersaForm from one computer to another be sure to take all the files and sub-directories from the current computer to the new computer. Before starting such a project it is highly recommended that you have a recent back-up.

NOTE : if you are upgrading to a newer version of MD VersaForm complete the upgrade before moving your system to the new computer.

Several methods are available for moving the program to a new computer:

PCAnywhere version 8.0 and above comes with a parallel cable. When connected it allows one computer to access the drive and file of the other computer. Set up the Remote on the new computer. Set up the old computer as Host. From the Remote copy the VF directory and sub-directories from the Host computer.

NOTE: PCAnyWhere is an excellent tool to help make technical support easier and faster. It is also a great learning tool for local offices. We recommend all offices install this software. You can purchase PCAnywhere from VersaFrom Sales at 1-800-678-1111 or at your local software store.

A Zip disk can be attached to the old computer. Copy the VF directory and all its sub-directories to the zip disk. Now attach the Zip disk to the new computer. Copy the files from the zip disk to the new computer's hard drive.

If the two computers exist on the same network just copy the files from the old computer onto the new computer.

If the same back-up program exists on both computers you can back upall VersaFrom files and the subdirectories to diskettes or tape on the old computer and restore onto the new computer. Follow the directions for back and for restore that came with your back-up software. Note..most backup programs are set up to back up only the data files not the program files.

A commercial product called LapLink comes with a cable you connect to both computers. The program is loaded in both computers. A screen shows the directory on both computers. You simply drag and drop from one machine to the other machine.

All of the above assume that you are comfortable with using a file management program like Windows Explorer or File Manager. If you have doubts contact your local technician or call technical support.
