Illegal Operations Errors/Memory Problems

If you are getting "illegal operations" errors in Windows 95/98 or memory problems check to see if you have a config.sys file. If not see below for a sample file.

Check the Version numbers on the main menu. It is likely that the MD version does not match the XL version.

Re-install the proper version. Be sure the script gets run.

A new installation of Windows 95 or Windows 98 will not have a "config.sys" file. VersaForm looks to this file to get the buffer allocation. The install will not work properly if the install program cannot locate "config.sys". Moving the VF files to a Windows 95/98 machine that does not have a "config.sys" file will cause the same problem.

Here is a sample "plain vanilla" "config.sys" file. Use it where there is no file present on the system or when the "config.sys" file has unneeded drivers or commands:

DEVICE=X:\XDIRECTORY\HIMEM.SYS

DEVICE=X:\XDIRECTORY\EMM386.EXE NOEMS

DOS=HIGH, UMB

FILES=99

BUFFERS=99

Where:

"X" is the drive where the file resides (generally "C")

"XDIRECTORY" is the directory resides (generally "windows" or "dos")

The above commands loads the memory manager and allows enough files and buffers for VersaForm to run properly.
